Marcus' mother was murdered when he was only 6 years old, and his father passed away after a chronic illness shortly before Marcus turned 17. With no family willing to care for him, Marcus lived in three different placements until he eventually aged out and was forced to find a way to live independently.
Above and Beyond helped Marcus cope with his grief, manage anger issues, obtain a GED and develop a plan for his future. Marcus is now studying to be an EMT.
As a very young child, Sally was severely abused sexually and physically. Her hair was burned off at one point as a punishment. Above and Beyond provided support and advocacy for Sally and her adoptive family while she struggled due to the developmental delay and mental health challenges that the trauma caused.
Today Sally has the educational and therapeutic supports she needs to achieve academic and social success and her new parents are connected to multiple supports.
One in four children experience a traumatic event before the age of 16. Fewer than 20% of children who struggle because of trauma get the support they need. Often the needs of these children far exceed traditional program supports offered in their community.
Above and Beyond: Children & Community Services is dedicated to helping children and their families when trauma has impacted their lives.
